In today's digital landscape, cybersecurity threats are constantly evolving, making it crucial to keep our devices up to date. Information Technology Services (ITS) implements regular software updates and security patches for all Windows and Mac machines we manage, to ensure a secure and reliable computing environment. This proactive approach helps safeguard both personal and institutional data while enhancing system performance.
What’s Happening?
Operating system and software updates, known as patches, are deployed to all ITS-managed computers to maintain security. These patches fix vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cyber threats, improve system stability, and sometimes introduce new features.
- Windows Users: Updates for Windows users are sent to ITS-managed computers once a month, beginning on the third Tuesday of each month. These updates include both operating system and software patches. Users will receive a taskbar notification prompting them to apply the update. When you see this notification, select it to open the update window, then click Apply. Once the patching process is complete, you must restart your computer to finalize the update.
- Mac Users: Operating system updates for Mac users are sent to ITS-managed Apple devices once a month, beginning on the third Tuesday of the month. Users will receive a notification prompting them to apply the update within two weeks. Other software outside the operating system is updated monthly as vendors release new versions.

How You Can Help
Ensuring the success of this initiative requires your cooperation:
- Restart Promptly: When notified, save your work and restart your device to apply patches.
- Check for Updates: If you haven't received a notification, manually check for updates. Windows users can find updates in Windows Update, while Mac users can locate them under System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Report Issues: If you haven't received updates in the last month, please submit a service ticket at service@sfsu.edu to request servicing.
What’s in It for You?
Keeping your system up to date offers several benefits:
- Enhanced Security: Software updates protect against malware, ransomware, and other cyber threats.
- Better Performance: The latest patches improve speed, efficiency, and system stability, ensuring your device operates at peak performance.
- Compliance & Support: Staying up to date ensures access to the latest features and institutional resources without compatibility issues.
Your participation in this patching process is essential to maintaining a secure and efficient computing environment for everyone. Without your cooperation, ITS may need to implement a fully automated patching process, which could result in updates being applied at less convenient times. By working together to keep our systems updated, we reduce risks and create a safer digital workspace for all Gators. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our digital community secure!
