The Importance of Updating Computer Software
Information Technology Services (ITS) implements regular software updates and security patches for all or all non-Academic Affairs affiliated Windows and Apple computers to ensure a secure and reliable computing environment. This proactive approach helps safeguard personal and institutional data while enhancing system performance.Operating system and software updates, known as patches, are deployed to all ITS-owned computers to maintain security. These updates fix vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cyber threats, improve system stability, and introduce new features.
Windows (Dell) Users
Updates for Dell users are sent to ITS-managed computers once a month, beginning on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. These notifications include operating system updates and software updates. Users will receive a notification in the taskbar prompting them to apply an update to their computer. When you see that dialogue box, click on it to bring it up, then click apply. When the patching process is complete, you must restart your computer to finish the process.
Apple Users
Operating system updates for Apple devices are sent to ITS-managed devices once a month, beginning on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Users will receive a notification that asks them to apply the update within 2 weeks. Other software outside the operating system is updated monthly as vendors provide updates.
