Enabling SafeLinks for SFSU Email (June 11, 2021 at 8:00 a.m.)

Overview:

ITS is continuing to work to improve email security, and to combat email phishing that is rampaging in Higher Ed.

As part of our Office 365 licensing, we have an advanced security feature called SafeLinks, which scans URLs (links) embedded in the email and blocks those identified as malicious.

What can you expect:

Once the SafeLinks feature is enabled, you might notice that some URLs contained in an email message have been rewritten and have a new hyperlink address starting with https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/. This is part of how the feature works and does not indicate suspicious activity, nor does it change the behavior of the links except when they are identified by Microsoft as being malicious. Links that are deemed malicious will present a security warning to the user instead of following the link to the destination URL.

While this feature is going to provide an additional level of security, there is nothing that is 100% guaranteed to block phishing attempts. Please continue to remember not to click on suspicious links or links you do not trust.
