Install or update Java in Windows

 

You must be logged into an account with administrative rights to update or install Java.

  1. Open Firefox or Internet Explorer and go to: http://java.com.
  2. Click on Free Java Download.
  3. Read the end user license agreement then click on Agree and Start Free Download.
  4. Save the Java installer:
    • Firefox:  Save the file jxpiinstall.exe (you may only see jxpiinstall).
    • Internet Explorer: Save the file JavaSetupxxxx.com, where xxxx is the current Java version and update number (e.g., Version 7 update 65 is JavaSetup7u65.com).
  5. Close your web browser.
  6. Open the folder where you saved the Java installer and double-click on it to start the installation.
  7. If asked if you want the following program to make changes to your computer, click on Yes.
  8. Click on Install in the Welcome to Java window.
  9. Do not install add-ons if any are offered.  Uncheck all add-on check boxes then click Next.Uncheck ad-ons
  10. If the message This software has already been installed on your computer.  Would you like to reinstall it? appears, click No.  You have the current version of Java installed.  Do not proceed to the next step.
  11. If you receive a Close Programs to Continue message, save any work and click Close Programs and Continue and then OK.
  12. Wait until you see You have successfully installed Java then click on Close.
  13. Your default web browser will open the Verify Java and Find Out-of-Date Versions page.
  14. Click on Agree and Continue.
  15. If you see Activate Java Platform SE xxx (xxx = the installed version of Java) click it.activate Java
  16. If asked to allow Java to run, click on Allow Now.
  17. If asked to run Java Uninstall Applet, click on Run.
  18. Java will confirm that the current version is installed. If Java detects an earlier version, unless the earlier version is needed to run work-related software, it should be removed. If you have version 6 or earlier installed, check with your local IT staff before removing Java.
  19.  Click on Uninstall Selected Versions.Old Versions
  20. You will be warned that uninstalling old versions of Java may cause old programs not to run.  Click Continue to uninstall.
  21. If asked if you want the following program to make changes to your computer, click on Yes.
  22. Wait until the uninstall completes.
