FileZilla (sFTP) Guide

FileZilla is a powerful sFTP client for both Windows and Mac. It has been designed for ease of use and with support for as many features as possible, while still being fast and reliable.

 

Download FileZilla

  1. Download the FileZilla installer for your operating system.
  2. Double click the installer to install the FileZilla client on your computer.

 

Connect with FileZilla

  1. Launch FileZilla.
  2. Enter the following:
    • Hostname: online.sfsu.edu, unixlab.sfsu.edu, or www.sfsu.edu
    • Username: your e-mail account name (e.g., janedoe for account janedoe@sfsu.edu)
    • Password: your SF State password
    • Port: 22
  3. Click Quickconnect. After connecting, the program will display local computer files on the left and files on the server to the right.

 

Connection Settings:

  • Server: online.sfsu.edu (faculty accounts), unixlab.sfsu.edu (faculty/student applications), or www.sfsu.edu (departmental accounts)
  • Username: your account name (e.g., if your email address is janedoe@sfsu.edu, type janedoe)
  • Password: your SF State password
  • Port: 22

 

Backup/copy data with FileZilla

  1. Launch FileZilla.
  2. Enter the following:
    • Hostname: online.sfsu.edu, online.sfsu.edu or unixlab.sfsu.edu
    • Username: your e-mail account name (e.g., janedoe for account janedoe@sfsu.edu)
    • Password: your SF State password
    • Port: 22
  3. Click Quickconnect. After connecting, the program will display local computer files on the left and files on the server to the right.
  4. Use the two left panels to navigate to the location where you wish to create a local, backup copy of your data.
  5. Use the two right panels to navigate to the hosted folder(s) containing your data and drag and drop the files to the lower left panel. Progress of the transfer will be displayed on the tabs at the bottom of the window.
  6. Follow the previous step for any folders and files you wish to backup/copy. Do not backup/copy the default .snapshot, .ssh, or bash folders/files.
  7. Use the tabs at the bottom of the FileZilla window to verify that all files were transferred successfully.
